Dogs and cats bring nothing but love and loyalty for the humans who are lucky enough to adopt them. Unfortunately, animals are often victims of circumstances over which they have no control. Our pet-friendly Springs San Antonio community welcomes four-legged residents, even certain larger breeds. And if you’re a pet lover, consider donating your time or money to one of these worthy organizations that works to give animals a better life.
Animal Care Services (ACS)
4710 State Highway 151
San Antonio 78227
ACS is operated by the City of San Antonio as the largest open-admission municipal shelter in South Texas. In addition to maintaining an adoption center, ACS works to unite lost pets and their owners and also investigates cases of animal cruelty. Monetary donations are gratefully accepted, as are volunteers willing to assist with animal care, administrative duties, event staffing and other positions.
San Antonio Humane Society (SAHS)
4804 Fredericksburg Road
San Antonio 78229
SAHS was established in 1952 as a non-profit organization with a mission to care for homeless animals until they are placed in a forever home. Their adoption center is open seven days a week. If you're not in a position to take in a pet, you can become a Guardian Angel with a contribution that helps to lower adoption fees, making it easier for pets to find homes. Volunteers are needed to assist at the Puppy Palace and Kitty Cottage as well as with community outreach programs. Youth aged 12-15 may enroll in tandem with a parent or guardian.
San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA)
SAPA! has a goal to make San Antonio a 100% no-kill community by rescuing animals on the euthanasia list from the city shelter and educating pet owners about responsible care. They conduct regular adoption events at Animal Care Services as well as Paul Jolly Center for Pet Adoptions, PETCO and The Cattery. Individual and group volunteers are accepted to act as greeters, kennel attendants, adoption counselor assistants and numerous other positions.
Spay Neuter Inject Protect of San Antonio (SNIPSA)
P.O. Box 90325
San Antonio 78209
SNIPSA was formed by a group of veterinarians and animal lovers in an attempt to find forever homes for unwanted pets. Rather than maintain a shelter of their own, they depend on volunteers to foster and rehabilitate animals until they can be placed. The staff makes weekly trips to area shelters to rescue animals that are on a euthanasia list. Since 2005 SNIPSA has re-homed more than 3,000 pets. Some of the duties manned by volunteers include working at adoption events and staffing "Big Fix" clinics where pets are spayed, neutered, vaccinated and microchipped at no charge.
