Attending one of County Line's Thursday night shows may cost you a buck or two, but you won't mind. While admission is free, guests are asked to make a food or monetary contribution to the San Antonio Food Bank. Shows begin at 7:30 p.m. on the restaurant's full-service patio.

3. Balcones Heights Jazz Festival
Amphitheater at Wonderland of the Americas

Each Saturday in July

The sultry sounds of jazz are a perfect match for San Antonio summer nights and the Balcones Heights Jazz Festival has been a local institution for more than 22 years. Performances are at 7:30 p.m. and 9 p.m. each evening, so grab your blankets and lawn chairs and get there early.

4. 4th of July Celebration
Woodlawn Lake Park

Monday, July 4

San Antonio does Independence Day right with a full day of music, activities and fireworks. Early birds can work off some calories ahead of time with a Zumbathon or 1K and 5K races beginning at 8 a.m. The rest of the day is packed with activities, including a kids' parade, carnival rides and live music from the U.S. Air Force Band of the West, wrapping up at 9:30 p.m. with a spectacular fireworks display.

5. McNay Second Thursdays
McNay Art Museum

Thursday, July 14 and Thursday, August 11

Celebrate classic Americana at the McNay with free admission to view the current exhibition, "Coney Island: Visions of an American Dreamland 1861 - 2008." Local food trucks will be on hand selling refreshments and beer.

6. Ford Canoe Challenge
