Love Is a Four-Legged Word: 5 Tips for Finding a Pet-Friendly Apartment in San Antonio

(February 02, 2017)

pet-friendly-san-antonio-apartment.jpgIt's estimated that there are nearly half a million dogs and cats living in San Antonio households, so chances are good that your Springs luxury apartment home includes one. Our San Antonio communities are pet-friendly because we know how much joy and satisfaction they bring to both families and individuals.

Here are some things you should know to keep your "blended" household mutually pleasant and trouble-free.

1. Difference Between Deposits and Fees

Even the most good-natured pets can innocently cause damage, which a pet deposit is designed to cover. Deposits are one-time payments, while pet fees are a modest amount that is added to the monthly rent.

2. Check Your Insurance Policy

While liability insurance is required for all dogs and for large aquariums, you should have sufficient coverage for any pet to make sure you're financially protected.

3. Beyond Cats and Dogs

Are you fascinated by more exotic animals such as ferrets, reptiles or mice? We welcome these pets also as long as they are kept in the appropriate enclosure, whether it's a cage, tank or aquarium.

4. Fine Points of Dog Parenting

Unlike some other communities, at Springs there are only four dog breeds on the restricted list, so you're not limited to smaller breeds. Larger breeds such as akitas and chow chows may be approved upon completion of the following:

  • Provide certification of completed behavior training
  • Schedule a time for your dog to meet with a member of our on-site management team

The Humane Society of the United States recommends compiling a "doggie resume" with pertinent information such as current health records and references from previous landlords.

5. Good Neighbor Policy

While most smaller pets are relatively low-maintenance, dogs require some extra TLC. If you adopt a dog, be prepared to commit to putting in the time and effort to raise a well-mannered pet.

  • Nothing will wear out your welcome with the neighbors faster than allowing your dog to bark at random. If you have difficulty controlling him, consider professional training.
  • Dogs need regular exercise to release pent-up energy. Plan daily walk times or enlist a friend or dog walker if necessary.
  • San Antonio Animal Control has a code requiring that all dogs be leashed when outside of your apartment. We do have on-site leash-free dog parks for your convenience.

Do you have any other questions about our generous pet policy? Members of our on-site management team are happy to answer them!
