find-an-apartment-san-antonio.jpgLooking for a new apartment in San Antonio is a bit more involved than shopping for a new outfit or even buying a new car. Rent is the biggest item in your budget, and it's difficult to be happy if you're not satisfied with your home.

Here are suggestions from our Springs leasing team for organizing your apartment search into an efficient timeline.

When Should I Begin My Search?

The short answer: as soon as you decide to move. You'll want to do some research to establish a solid starting point, so you should start at least three months out from your projected moving date.

Setting a Budget

This shouldn't take longer than one evening, but it's an absolutely essential step. Knowing what you can afford to spend lets you narrow your search significantly right off the bat.

Conducting Research

Today you have the advantage of being able to do most of your initial research online. Focus on potential neighborhoods as well as specific apartment communities.

The more research you do, the more options you have. According to a survey by Rent.com, approximately one-third of renters looked at more than 20 apartments online. Our Springs San Antonio communities offer helpful 3D floor plans that let you see a "furnished" apartment.

Scheduling Appointments

Most apartment communities require a 30-day notice of intent to move, so you can start scheduling tours about four to six weeks out. Nearly half of the respondents in Rent.com's survey said they viewed at least seven apartments before making a decision, so use that number as a benchmark.

If you've done your homework and identified several possibilities, you should be able to group them together so you can visit two or three at a time. Allow about a week for this step, although you may be able to complete your appointments within one weekend if you're ambitious or moving from out-of-town.

Submitting an Application

You should have check stubs, ID and other application materials with you while viewing apartments so you're ready to submit an application on the spot if you find the right place. Regardless of when you fill out the application, allow one to five business days for a response.

Congratulations!

You've found a great new apartment. Complete any other necessary paperwork and make your moving arrangements about two weeks before D-day. Three weeks is preferable if you're moving from out-of-town.
