Looking for a New "Roommate"? Check Out These 4 Great San Antonio Pet Shelters

(May 12, 2016)

Pet-Shelters-SA.jpgOne of the features our residents love most about Springs San Antonio is our pet-friendly communities. We include amenities like on-site dog parks and pet spas so your furry friends will feel as comfortable as you do.

Have you decided to bring a pet into your luxury apartment home? Check out the deserving cats and dogs at these wonderful local shelters.

1. San Antonio Humane Society
4804 Fredericksburg Rd
210.226.7461

SAHS takes in approximately 5,000 needy animals each year. When you visit the shelter to adopt a pet, you're asked to spend 20 to 30 minutes with the one you choose to ensure compatibility. Afterwards, a counselor will sit down with you to review your application. Other services include dog training classes and spring and summer educational camps for kids. The adoption center is open seven days a week from noon until 7 p.m.

2. Animal Defense League of Texas
11300 Nacogdoches Rd
210.655.1481

The ADL was established in 1934, and over time the shelter has grown from a few chicken-wire cages to a 12-acre campus that includes a 5,000 square-foot clinic. For apartment residents, counselors will contact community management to confirm eligibility, or you can bring in a copy of your lease specifying pet guidelines. Stop in at Fetching Finds Thrift Shop, which sells gently used furnishings and household items to help support the shelter. The adoption center is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

3. San Antonio Pets Alive
201 Tuleta Dr
210.370.7612

Unlike most shelters, SAPA does not take surrendered animals from the public. Their focus is on helping San Antonio attain no-kill status by accepting animals that are marked for euthanasia from the city shelter. The adjoining Petco Pavilion is the site of adoption events and fundraisers as well as spring and summer monthly markets featuring pet-friendly products. Hours for the main adoption center are 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. weekdays and 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. weekends. SAPA also maintains an adoption center at Petco, located at 6001 NW Loop 410.

4. Adopt-a-Pet.com

Adopt-a-Pet.com is not a brick-and-mortar shelter. It's a unique way to search for a pet from the city-run Animal Care Services. When you visit the website, select "Dogs" or "Cats" and enter your zip code. You can then filter on criteria including breed, sex, color, size and age. Can't find what you're looking for? Sign up for Pet Alerts to receive an email with a photo and link when a pet matching your criteria becomes available.

Dogs and cats have their own individual personalities. Do you have a funny pet story to share? Tell us in the comments!
