Selecting_a_Mover

Are you planning your move into one of our Springs Apartments communities in San Antonio? Hiring a moving company to help with the process is supposed to reduce stress, not add to it. Get some peace of mind by using our favorite tips to find a dependable, efficient mover.

Start Close to "Home"

The mover you select is going to be handling items that are high in monetary and personal value, so picking a random name from a list should not be your first step. Network with your circle of family, friends and coworkers and solicit recommendations. Getting suggestions from those with firsthand experience eliminates a lot of the guesswork.

Turn to the Internet

Once you have a list of candidates, it's time to begin taking a closer look. Go online to do some research, including a look at each one's website if available. Sites like Better Business Bureau, Angie's List and MovingScam provide a helpful source of feedback from other customers.

It's also a good idea to see if a mover is listed with the American Moving and Storage Association. The organization issues ProMover status to eligible members who meet their criteria. Membership is not mandatory for moving companies, but it does indicate compliance with Federal regulations and professional standards.

Narrow Your Search

You should be able to whittle your list down to three final candidates for an in-person meeting. Schedule an appointment for each one to come to your home and prepare an estimate. Beware of any companies that want to issue an estimate over the phone without actually examining the contents of your home.

Ask the Right Questions

A reputable mover should be prepared to answer the following questions:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Will you be doing the move, or will you subcontract to another company?
  • Can you give me any references?
  • What are your license numbers? Be sure to get both U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) and motor carrier (MC) numbers.
  • What are the hourly rates and what additional charges are included?

Do Your Final Vetting

Before making your final decision, go to the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website and search on the company's USDOT number. You can confirm data like address and phone number as well as find plenty of other information such as the company's number of trucks and drivers, safety rating and insurance coverage.
