Instead of hunkering down until spring, residents of Rochester embrace the season and enjoy a variety of events like the annual Rochester WinterFest. This festival runs from January 18 through February 18 and includes a wide selection of outdoor activities, special fundraisers, and events for all ages.

The Rochester WinterFest annually welcomes more than 6,500 attendees to about 30 different events organized by various local organizations. On average, WinterFest raises $350,000 each year for the non-profit organizations of Rochester. Ice Skating on the Oval (January 20)

Great for all ages, Ice Skating on the Oval is a Rochester tradition that can't be missed. The event held as part of WinterFest takes place on January 20 at Soldiers Field Park. It's free and even includes free hot chocolate.

The GREAT Cardboard Sled Race (January 28)

Hosted by the Minnesota Children's Museum, the GREAT Cardboard Sled Race will commence on January 28 at the Rochester Golf and Country Club. All donations received for this event benefit the work of the Minnesota Children's Museum Rochester. Awards will be given to teams for the following categories:

  • Creativity
  • Fastest Sled
  • Furthest Run
  • Most Dollars Raised
  • Team Spirit

Frozen Goose Run/Walk (February 3)

This is the 16th year for this special event that's hosted by the Rochester Optimist Club and held at the University Center Rochester Atrium. The Run/Walk registration begins at noon on February 3 with the race kicking off at 1 p.m. This is part of WinterFest and proceeds benefit childhood cancer research at the Mayo Clinic and the family support group Brighter Tomorrows.

Ski by Candlelight (February 6)

On February 6, come out to Quarry Hill to enjoy skiing by candlelight. This unique festival event is just $10 per person and is the ideal way to soak up the beauty of Minnesota's winter landscape. After your ski, come into the Nature Center for hot cocoa and s'mores.

Polar Plunge (February 10)

In 2017, more than 900 Plungers raised $275,333 as part of the annual fundraising of the Law Enforcement TorchRun® events that benefit Special Olympics Minnesota. This year's Polar Plunge takes place on Saturday, February 10 at Foster Arend Park, located less than ten miles north of the Springs at South Broadway apartments.

Please note that there is no on-site parking available at this event. A free shuttle bus will run beginning at 11 a.m. on the day of the event for both participants and spectators. It will run approximately every 15 minutes from Bowman Tool, the Chateau Theatre, and the Whistle Binkies Pub.

SnoBall XL (February 10)

In its 40th year, the annual SnoBall Slow-Pitch Softball Tournament will take place on February 10. Games will be played at McQuillan, Homestead, Bear Creek, and Slattery Parks with all fundraising proceeds to benefit the Eagles Cancer Telethon.

It's Snow Crazy (February 11)

Held at Quarry Hill from 1:30 p.m. until 3:30 p.m., the It's Snow Crazy event is all about snow—from making snow candy to snow bowling. This is for all ages and registration is required.
