1. Beast Village Comedy Festival

Held in the Des Moines neighborhood of East Village, the Beast Village Comedy Festival provides attendees with the opportunity to enjoy both national and local comedic talent. Spanning three days from October 5-7, Friday's headliner is Josh Johnson and Saturday's is Myq Kaplan.

2. 48th Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival

Since 1970, Madison County has celebrated the six remaining covered bridges within its borders with its Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival. For 2017, the event is slated to take place on October 14 and 15 from 9 AM until 5 PM both days. Sponsored by the Madison County Chamber of Commerce, the Annual Madison County Covered Bridge Festival features events such as antique tractor rides, a parade, a 5K walk/run, a horseshoe tournament, a pancake breakfast, a Pioneer Village and much more.

3. Walnut Creek Watershed Festival

The two-day Walnut Creek Watershed Festival will run from Friday, October 6 through Saturday, October 7, 2017. Both days are packed with a variety of activities that are designed to demonstrate to both children and adults the importance of protecting the local watershed in nearby Windsor Heights. In addition to a creek clean-up and invasive species removal event on both days, there are numerous demonstrations including building bat boxes, rain barrels, nature walk and more. From 4 PM until 7 PM, the festival includes live music, food trucks and craft beer.

4. Taco Festival

Get your taco on at the Taco Festival on October 7 from 12 PM until 6 PM at Western Gateway Park. A $12 general admission ticket allows Taco Festival attendees to have access to food trucks, taco makers, restaurants and more handing out tacos for $2. Beverage stations and bars provide a variety of liquid refreshment while dessert vendors help complete the meal.
