Living Large: 9 Tips for Keeping a Large Dog Happy in Your Apartment

Keeping-Large-Dog-Happy-in-Apartment.jpgAt Springs, we believe furry friends come in all shapes and sizes, so we welcome many large dog breeds. All of our communities include on-site off-leash dog parks and pet spas to make it convenient to care for your precious pet.

Here are some more helpful tips to keep your beloved Great Dane or Golden Retriever happy in your Springs luxury apartment home.

1. Know Your Breed

Dogs that are similar in size are not necessarily similar in temperament. For example, Irish Setters are usually friendly with everyone, while Dalmatians are more commonly wary of strangers. Research your dog's characteristics and pay attention to how he acts in different situations.

2. Focus on Training

Because their size may intimidate some people, it's important for large dogs to have good manners. A well-trained dog also makes for a more peaceful home.

3. Set a Routine

Dogs in general get a sense of security with an established routine. Your pet will be more comfortable knowing there will be regular exercise, feedings and potty breaks.

4. Get Plenty of Exercise

Yes, exercise is an essential part of a dog's daily routine. It keeps his weight under control and helps burn off excess energy. Note that this is another area where you should be guided by your dog's temperament. Some breeds have lower energy levels and can manage with one walk a day, while others may require more frequent playtimes.

5. Don't Forget Mental Exercise

Just like their humans, dogs need mental stimulation to stay sharp and avoid boredom. Teach your pet tricks, play games with him and keep an assortment of toys on hand.

6. Have Doggy Playdates

As much as your pet loves you, he gets a level of companionship from other dogs that he can't get from you. Both of you can socialize with your neighbors at our on-site dog parks.

7. Give Your Dog "Space"

Everyone should have their own personal safe space, and dogs are no exception. Designate a spot in your Springs apartment home where you can set up a crate or bed with a soft pillow or blanket and a couple of his favorite toys. If possible, put his food and water nearby.

8. Consider a Dog Walker or Doggy Daycare

If your dog is high-energy or tends to have separation anxiety, you may want to have a friend or family member come by and spend some time or take your pet for occasional visits to a doggy daycare.

9. Stay Current with Wellness Exams

Your dog can't tell you when he's not feeling well. Regular visits to the vet will ensure your pet is up-to-date with vaccinations and help you catch any health problems before they get worse.
