Child’s Play — 10 Tips for Designing the Perfect Nursery

Designing-Perfect-Nursery.jpgCongratulations! You're expecting a new addition to the family in your Springs luxury apartment home. Part of the excitement is planning the nursery, so we've put together some helpful tips and suggestions to jump-start your own creative ideas.

Decor

There was a time when it was almost standard to decorate nurseries in the traditional colors of pink for girls and blue for boys, but today's choices are less regimented.

  • There's a trend toward soft neutral shades like grey, cream and sage that are stylish but classic and create a peaceful ambiance.
  • Colors have specific psychological effects, so you might want to choose a palette that will influence your child in positive ways.

Furniture

Look for pieces that successfully combine form and function.

  • The one must-have piece that you'll plan the room around is the crib. Choose a practical and attractive convertible crib with adjustable mattress heights that will "grow" along with your child.
  • Unless you want to take a cue from a recent TV commercial and use the kitchen island, your nursery should have a changing table. This item has great possibilities for multi-tasking, as many styles include built-in dressers, shelves, baskets and other storage capabilities.
  • A nursing nook is optional, but you'll really appreciate it during those late-night feeding sessions. Your best bet is a rocking chair or glider that can transition to the living room once your child is grown.

Accessories

This really is the fun part where you choose items that make your baby's nursery unique.

  • Baby monitors are pretty much standard for modern nurseries. Thanks to improved technology, you can get high-quality video monitors as well as audio ones.
  • Mobiles come in a seemingly infinite number of styles, and they engage a baby's attention for a soothing effect. Be sure to hang them safely out of your child's reach.
  • Music is another way to provide sensory stimulation that also calms your child. Include a CD player or MP3 dock and choose tunes you can enjoy together.
  • Soft lighting makes a nursery feel cozy, and it's easier on baby's eyes. "Layering" with three or four lamps is a good way to control the level of light. Don't forget a night light to avoid a sharp, unpleasant contrast during the wee hours.
  • DIY artwork is a great way to add a personalized touch and create family keepsakes. Why not incorporate a decorating project with a baby shower?
