Show-Support-Armed-Forces-Day-San-Antonio.jpgSince 1949, the third Saturday in May has been designated as Armed Forces Day to recognize and thank the men and women who have served our country. San Antonio is rich in military tradition, so it's a great place to honor the selfless members of the Armed Forces at one of these special events.

1. Armed Forces River Parade
San Antonio River Walk
22.2 miles from Springs at Bandera

It's no surprise that San Antonio's most popular destination is doing it up big for Armed Forces Day. Beginning at 6 p.m. on Saturday, May 20, 25 floats carrying representatives from all five military branches will travel along the 2.5-mile downtown area of River Walk. Following the parade, the Air Force Airhawk Band will put on a concert at the Arneson River stage. Admission is free, but why not reserve a prime viewing spot at one of the many restaurants and bars with patio seating?

2. "Comfort Creatures" by Heather Gauthier
Greller Gallery, 503 E Sonterra Blvd, San Antonio
210.262.2727
31.9 miles from Springs at Creekside

"Comfort Creatures" is a series of whimsical dog portraits created by local artist Heather Gauthier. The exhibit is on display at Greller Gallery to support Train a Dog, Save a Warrior, which is an organization that provides "Battle Buddies" to wounded and disabled veterans. At 7:30 p.m. on May 20, the gallery is hosting a meet-the-artist reception that includes a talk by Ms. Gauthier. Seating is limited, so visit the website to RSVP.

3. The Alamo
300 Alamo Plaza, San Antonio
210.225.1391
15.9 miles from Springs at Live Oak

There's no more iconic symbol of America's proud military heritage than the Alamo, and we're fortunate to have it right in our own backyard. Visit the Alamo and honor the memory of legends such as James Bowie, Davy Crockett and all the other courageous men who fought at this landmark. On May 20, writer John R. Knaggs will be in the gift shop from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. to autograph copies of his historical novel, The Bugles Are Silent: A Novel of the Texas Revolution from the Alamo to San Jacinto.

4. Battle for Texas: The Experience
Alamo Plaza at Blum St, San Antonio
800.514.3849
19.8 miles from Springs at Alamo Ranch

Take a trip back in time for a fascinating glimpse into the daily lives of the state's earliest settlers and see how the Texas Revolution changed things forever. In addition to more than 250 artifacts on display, the museum features interactive reenactments that give the sensation of actually being there. Saturday hours are 10 a.m. through 9 p.m. Tickets are $19.50 for adults and $14.50 for kids between 6-12.

Our Springs San Antonio management team invites our residents to join us in thanking the men and women of the military for their daily sacrifices to preserve our freedom.Everything You Need to Know About Renting an Apartment
