thrift-store-treasures-in-san-antonioLiving in San Antonio gives you access to all the top national retailers, whether you're shopping for clothes, furniture or housewares. Sometimes, though, you like to go "outside the box" to find that hip jacket or funky end table that you won't see anywhere else.

Would it surprise you to hear that you can find these and more at local thrift stores? People often dismiss them as "junk" shops, but an item doesn't necessarily lose value simply because someone has tired of it. Why not check out these thrift stores and see what treasures you can find?

Thrift Town
2864 Thousand Oaks Drive
Open 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, 10 a.m. - 6 p.m. Sunday

Thanks to more than 4,000 items arriving daily, each trip to this shop is like the first time. Thrift Town supports the community by purchasing their used clothing, housewares and other products from local non-profit organizations. They also add an element of fun with whimsical contests such as "green" prom dressing and ugly holiday sweaters.

Texas Thrift
Multiple locations
Open 9 a.m. - 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday, noon - 6 p.m. Sunday

With name-brand clothing and a wide selection of accessories including shoes, belts and purses, Texas Thrift is a fashion lover's dream. The store also features specialty categories such as uniforms, plus-size, maternity, and wedding and formal. All sections are carefully organized for convenient browsing. Visit the website for the addresses of their San Antonio locations.

Assistance League of San Antonio Thrift House
2611 West Avenue
Open 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday

The Assistance League operates several programs in the San Antonio area that benefit primarily children. Thrift House raises a major portion of their funds through sales of donated clothing, books, artwork and home decor.

RMYA Thrift Shop
3103 West Avenue
Open 9:30 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday

This thrift shop is operated for the benefit of Youth Alternatives, a non-profit organization that cares for children in crisis. Its current name pays tribute to founder Roy Maas. RMYA has a large selection of furniture and home accessories along with CDs and DVDs. Clothing is also available for men, women and children in all sizes.

Monkey Business Resale Shop
128 W. Blanco Road
Open 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday

The whimsical name is a hint that this is an animal-centric thrift store. Proceeds from sales of their funky, fabulous collections of clothing, jewelry and home decor benefit Primarily Primates, a wildlife sanctuary in Boerne, TX.

We value green living at our Springs Apartments community, and thrift store shopping is an eco-friendly way to recycle and repurpose items rather then add them to a landfill.
