When you think about the best beers in Texas, most people instantly think of Shiner Bock. And while it’s certainly hard to argue with such a reputable, quality brand, with 96 different breweries in Texas alone, Shiner Bock isn’t the only brewer that’s worthy of recognition. Whether you’re a fan of hoppy IPAs, rich, dark stouts, or anything in-between, there are tons of craft breweries worth trying – especially in the San Antonio area. If you’re a beer connoisseur looking to try the best beers San Antonio has to offer, make sure you stop at these 4 local breweries:

1. Freetail Brewing Company
4035 North Loop 1604 W #105
San Antonio, TX 78257

Since opening in 2008, Freetail Brewing Company has built a reputation as being one of the best brewpubs in the San Antonio area. As a matter of fact, they’ve become so popular that they opened a 2nd brewery this past September! And although this new, state-of-the-art brewery is used for commercial production only, you can still taste all their excellent brews at the original brewpub location. Visit their website to see all of the beers currently on tap, as well as a brewing schedule of what’s to come.

2. Ranger Creek Brewing and Distilling
4834 Whirlwind St.
San Antonio, TX 78217

If you like beer and whiskey, there’s no better spot in San Antonio than Ranger Creek. This combined brewery and distillery (a.k.a. “brewstillery”) not only makes award-winning rye whiskey, but they also produce a variety of delicious craft beers. And because both the distilling and brewing are done in the same space (with some of the same equipment), Ranger Creek has been able to create a number of unique flavors by aging their beer in their own bourbon barrels. Check out their beer list here, and make sure you stop by this brewstillery to get a taste of the seasonal and specialty brews.

3. Blue Star Brewing Company
1414 S Alamo St.
San Antonio, TX 78210

For those looking for another great brewpub to try, don’t forget to stop at Blue Star Brewing Company. Not only do they offer up some great Texas food, but their beers are some of the best in the city as well. Some of our favorites include their 2-year aged Raspberry Geyser and their Flying Pig Extra Pale Ale, but stop on by and sample all 8! And if you’re persnickety about quality, Blue Star only uses organic barley and hops, so you know you’re drinking the good stuff.

4. Branchline Brewing Co.
3633 Metro Pkwy
San Antonio, TX 78247

One of the newest breweries on the San Antonio scene is Branchline Brewing Co. Since opening in 2012, they’ve released 3 signature beers with plans for more in the process. Don’t let their small size fool you, however! Quality is definitely better than quantity, and Branchline certainly creates some quality brews. They even suggest different food pairings, serving temperatures, and which type of glass to use for each beer.
