You never know which local band you go to see will score a record deal and make it big. The Rochester area is home to a lot of great small music venues; here are our top four to check out.

1. Forager Brewery
1005 6th St NW

Forager Brewery makes some of the best small-batch craft beers and wood-fired pizzas in Rochester. They're also the perfect place to enjoy a live show. You can catch a local band almost every Friday or Saturday night—and some Wednesdays and Thursdays, too. Shows generally start around 7 or 8 p.m. Most bands have a rock vibe to them, but you'll catch indie shows, bluesy groups and even some country-inspired acts.

If you're into more experimental ot amateur music, you may want to check out one of Forager Brewery's open mic nights. These are held every Monday from 7:30–10:30 p.m. You don't have to purchase tickets for any of the shows at Forager. Just show up, grab a beer and some snacks and have a great time listening.

2. Kathy's Pub
307 S Broadway

Kathy's is a great place to visit if you're into upbeat music and feel like doing a little dancing. They host live performances by local bands every Friday and Saturday night. You'll hear everything from bluegrass to reggae—with a heavy dose of rock thrown in. There's no need to buy tickets, though they sometimes do charge a cover fee at the door for more notable bands. Kathy's has a good selection of craft beers and cocktails, and there are pool tables upstairs if you need a break from the music.

3. The Redwood Room
300 1st Ave NW

The cozy atmosphere at The Redwood Room makes it a great place to chill out and dine with friends. The restaurant was voted "most romantic atmosphere," making it a good choice for date night, too. They have live shows every night of the week, often featuring jazz and acoustic bands. While you listen, you can enjoy one of their signature pizzas, cajun-inspired dishes or a gourmet salad beneath the dim lights.

4. North Star Bar
503 N Broadway

The North Star Bar offers live music performed by local bands every Friday and Saturday night. Admission is free, and there is no cover charge. With a tendency toward rock and metal bands, this venue is great for a fun night with friends. They regularly host artists including Slow Children, Detrametal, and Blackout. Bands take the stage at 9:30 p.m., and you can enjoy one of their domestic tap beers for a mere 50 cents from 8:30–9:30 p.m. while you wait.
