Moving Tips in Summer Heat Oklahoma CityAre you planning a move to Oklahoma City this summer? While our Springs at May Lakes and Springs at Memorial apartment communities both feature a resort-style swimming pool to beat the heat, the process of moving can be especially grueling when the temperatures rise.

Here are several useful tips for moving this summer:

1. Turn On Utilities Prior to Moving Day

When you're moving in the summer heat, a top priority needs to be turning on your utilities before moving day arrives so you'll be moving your possessions into an air conditioned apartment.

2. Start Your Day Early

When you're moving in the summertime, the earlier you can begin your day, the better. The temperatures and UV rays in Oklahoma City tend to reach their peak between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m., so you'll want to avoid moving during this timeframe. Starting your day early will allow you to move in temperatures that are at least 10 degrees cooler than the hottest point of the day.

3. Dress Appropriately

Wear clothing that breathes and allows you to move comfortably. Cotton and linen are great materials as they're lightweight, breathable, and absorb sweat and moisture well. Wearing white and neutral-colored clothing will also help you to stay cool under the hot sun. Protect your head and face from the sun by wearing sunglasses and a hat.

4. Wear Sunscreen

Lather up with sunscreen that provides at least 30 SPF protection before heading outside. Be sure to cover your face, neck, ears, shoulders, arms, feet and legs, and make a point to reapply every 80 minutes.

5. Stay Hydrated

Lifting boxes is a sweat-drenching workout, which is why it's crucial that you drink plenty of water throughout the day. As a rule of thumb, you should drink at least eight glasses of water each day. Pack a cooler with bottled water to help yourself and your movers stay hydrated. If you're on a budget, pack reusable cups so you and your moving team can stay hydrated with tap water throughout the day.

6. Protect Heat-Sensitive Items

Take into consideration the items that won't fare well in the heat. Electronics, for example, won't do well if left in a hot moving truck for hours on end. When packing up the truck, pack these items separately so you can get them into your new air conditioned apartment home as soon as possible.

7. Recognize Overheating Symptoms

Be cognizant of any symptoms that you're experiencing during the move due to overheating. Such symptoms include headaches, nausea, dizziness, weakness and muscle cramps. If you start feeling these symptoms, take a break and hydrate and use a cool towel to lower your body temperature. Of course, a dip in the pool is the perfect way to end moving day and celebrate your arrival in your new home.
