Celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month in Oklahoma CityHispanic Heritage Month takes place from September 15 to October 15. These weeks are dedicated to celebrating Americans with ancestry in Mexico, Spain, Central America, South America and the Caribbean. Within this month, you’ll find the independence anniversaries of Guatemala, Honduras, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Chile and Mexico.

Celebrate your own Hispanic heritage or gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of others’ rich background with one of these local activities and events.

1. Explore the Cultural Appropriation or Appreciation Forum
University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond

From 5 to 8 p.m. on October 3, the University of Central Oklahoma is hosting a forum to discuss cultural appropriation. It will explore how things like the media and Halloween misrepresent many cultures. This forum will cover Hispanic culture and many others. You can attend and participate.

2. View the Hispanic Heritage Mural
514 SW 25th St, Oklahoma City

Take an afternoon to appreciate the Hispanic Heritage Mural on the side of the Hunter’s Battery Warehouse Building. This mural, painted in 2012, features an Aztec temple, the Virgin Mary’s praying hands, a rose-bedecked Senorita, historic gangster and more. It’s a stunning tribute to Hispanic heritage in Oklahoma City and a piece that’s definitely worth visiting this month.

3. Learn to Salsa Under the Stars
Chickasaw Plaza, University of Central Oklahoma, Edmond

On Thursday, October 5, the University of Central Oklahoma is hosting Salsa Under the Stars. You’ll learn the basics of salsa dance as the stars come out, creating a festive atmosphere. The event will also include a bar of chips and salsa for snacking throughout the evening.

4. Linger Over Hispanic Cuisine at Ted’s Café Escondido

5. Take Your Kids to the National Cowboy Museum

On October 7 from 10 a.m. to noon, the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum will host its Saturdays for Kids event with a Dia de los Muertos theme. Children will craft sugar skulls and paper flowers, enjoy face painting, and learn about the history and culture behind this holiday.
