My Neighbors Are Too Loud! What Should I Do?

(July 20, 2017) / by Mary Rud

Tips When your Neighbors are Too LoudWhen you're looking for a new luxury apartment home, you can check out floor plans, amenities and neighborhoods, but one thing that’s difficult to evaluate is noise. Here are some helpful tips from our Springs management team if you find the noise level is a bit too much.

1. How Loud Is Too Loud?

In most cities, quiet hours are designated by law. Our Springs communities observe quiet time between 10 p.m. and 8 a.m., which tends to be the standard designation. Some municipalities also have laws prohibiting sustained noise levels above a certain decibel.

Beyond that, there are no specific guidelines. All leases are legally construed to contain an implied covenant of quiet enjoyment, which means residents have the right to undisturbed use of their home, including the right to "peace and quiet."

2. What Are My Options?

For obvious reasons, apartment homes are different from single-family houses, so sometimes residents need to cut each other a bit of slack. Developing a tolerance for a modest level of occasional noise is beneficial for your peace of mind.

If the noise level is genuinely unacceptable, there are a few steps you can take:

  • Talk to your neighbor directly. One of the reasons we encourage socialization among our residents is that it's easier to work together when you know your neighbors. A friendly tone will go much further than a confrontational stance.
  • Talk to your Springs onsite management team. We have extensive experience handling situations like this in a constructive way. There may be mitigating circumstances that explain a temporary disturbance, or we can remind neighbors about community rules and how to maintain considerate behavior.
  • Consult our Springs Courtesy Officer. One of the ways we provide for the well-being of our residents is by employing a Courtesy Officer who is experienced with negotiating peaceful solutions to conflicts. If it's after hours, simply call the maintenance phone number and select the option for the Courtesy Officer.

3. How Can I Be a Good Neighbor?

The Golden Rule is still the best one to live by: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you." If you have to ask yourself if you're making too much noise, you probably are. Be considerate of your fellow residents.

If a neighbor should come to you about your barking dog or loud music, don't be defensive. For most people, a situation has to be serious for them to reach that step. Put yourself in the other person's shoes and work out a compromise that suits both of you.

We value your satisfaction so much that we've adopted the Springs Pledge to provide a level of customer service that sets us apart from other communities. Learn more from a friendly member of our onsite management team.Everything You Need to Know About Renting an Apartment
