Chase Away the Winter Blues With These 6 Des Moines Events

February 03, 16

Winter_Events_DM.jpgWinter still reigns in Des Moines, but not for too much longer. In the meantime, how about getting out and about and enjoying the lively scene around town? Buck the winter blues by partaking in the local sights and sounds. Here are a few suggestions to get you going:

1. My Funny Valentine
Feb. 2-7
The Temple Theater

Whether you have a Valentine or not, you'll enjoy this hilarious performance by Pat Hazell, a writer for Seinfeld and The Tonight Show, and comedian Karen Morgan, a winner of The Improv’s National Comic Search. They'll cover parenting and families, relationships and dating, and offer free advice to both lovers and the lovelorn.

2. Learn to Skate Classes
Every Saturday in Feb.
Brenton
 Plaza

Suffering from cabin fever and thinking some bracing outdoor exercise might be the cure? How about ice skating with a view of downtown Des Moines? Skate on your own in the open air during the day or under the stars at night. Novices may join skating classes led by renowned competitive skater and coach Darlene Lewis. The four-week course is $67.

3. Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra
Sunday, Feb. 21
Temple Orchestra

Somehow, the ukulele is enjoying a resurgence of popularity, and is a current hipster favorite, after falling into obscurity for many decades. Among the new crop of performers embracing the chunky, engaging sound of this diminutive stringed instrument is this charming orchestra from New Zealand. The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra, which has released several EPs and have toured widely, will charm you with their Kiwi humor. Be advised, they will demand you sing along, whether you know the words or not.

4. Dwight Yoakam
Thursday, Feb. 25
Hoyt Sherman Place

Catch country singer and songwriter Dwight Yoakam in concert as he presents songs from Second Hand Heart, his new album.  Don't know his new stuff yet? No worries, he will also play many of the tunes that brought him fame, such as A Thousand Miles From Nowhere and Guitars, Cadillacs. The Kentucky-born Yoakam is recognized for his authentic country sound and songwriting, and his rock n' roll edge.

5. Thursday Night Wine and Small Plates
Thursday, March 17
Tassell
 Ridge Winery

Green beer isn't for everyone, so if a nice glass of wine is more your style on St. Paddy's Day, head for the Tassel Ridge Winery. In addition to the wine, a special "green theme" menu will be served, including corned beef and cabbage, corned beef Reuben sandwiches, spinach tortilla chicken or cheese quesadillas and spinach salad with green apples.

6. Iowa Wild Ice Hockey
Wells Fargo Arena

Go wild with the Iowa Wild, Des Moines' American Hockey League  team. The Iowa Wild play 38 home games from Oct. through April. Keep an eye out for their special promotions. "Pink in the Rink", on Friday, Feb. 12, promotes breast cancer awareness with a pink t-shirt giveaway.  Take home a Wild water bottle when you  “Go Green” on Saturday, March 26.
