1. Texas Capitol Vietnam Veterans Monument
1100 Congress Ave, Austin

This monument serves as a memorial to the many Americans who served in the Vietnam War and, more specifically, to the 3,417 Texans who lost their lives in the war. You can download a smartphone app to take a virtual tour of the monument, which consists of a 14-foot bronze sculpture. Since the monument is found on the grounds of the State Capitol, you can also take a tour of the Capitol on the same trip. Tours are available seven days a week.

2. Texas Military Forces Museum
Camp Mabry, 2200 W 35th St, Austin

Spending an afternoon walking through the Texas Military Forces Museum is another great way to honor servicemen and servicewomen on Armed Forces Day. The museum is open Tuesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and admission is free, though free-will donations are always welcome.

The Texas Military Forces Museum contains exhibits on the Cold War, WWII, and the Global War on Terror. Guided tours are available for groups larger than 15, and you can schedule yours by calling the museum.

3. Bullock Texas State History Museum
1800 Congress Ave, Austin

Texas history has been marked by many bloody battles in which men and women gave their lives, first for independence from Mexico and later for the cause of statehood. This museum teaches visitors all about Texas history, focusing mostly on the post-Civil War era.

The museum is open seven days a week, and admission is $13 for adults and $9 for kids. You'll discover exhibits not only on military involvement, but Texas culture as well.

4. New Hope Animal Hospital Open House
1210 E New Hope Dr, Cedar Park

If you love animals, consider attending New Hope Animal Hospital's Armed Forces Day and Open House for a more unconventional celebration. It’s a family-friendly event held on Saturday, May 20 between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. And yes, your furry family members are welcome to attend, too. There will be nail trimming services, a vaccine clinic and even a pet bakery offering goodies on-site.

The animal hospital will also have a bounce house available, and they'll be hosting events with local pet rescues.
